Seminar on women's equality and autonomy in multi-ethnic societies
From the building of walls against potential asylum seekers to the rise of far-right parties, the restriction of foreign nationals' social rights, the imposition of obstacles to naturalisation and the selective prohibition of minority practices, the institutionalisation of racism is undermining the fundamental principles of conviviality in European societies. In keeping with its mission of legal-political evaluation and criticism, the MULTIHURI team organises its II Seminar series on racism, multi-discrimination and human rights, going on until the spring of 2017. Once a month, various academic and civil society experts meet at Valencia University's Faculty of Social Sciences to identify the challenges surrounding racist discriminations and propound ways of tackling them effectively and fairly. All sessions are open to the public and leave time for a debate among all those attending.
Inauguration of the II Seminar series on racism, multi-discrimination and human rights

MULTIHURI meeting at University of Nantes
Several MULTIHURI researchers will be at University of Nantes (France) on 4-5 October to take part in the international conference "European travellers: migrations, exiles, hybridity and citizenships in the XIX-XX centuries, Europe-America". Ángeles Solanes will deliver a keynote lecture entitled "Symbols, identity and islamophobia. On the function of the democratic state under the rule of law"; Pilar Martínez-Vasseur will examine Spanish emigration to Latin America (1898-1936) from the perspective of identity and nation-building processes; Encarnación La Spina will address the challenges of coexisting with diverse family models; and Pier-Luc Dupont will analyse the interaction between European citizenship, migration and the protection of cultural rights. The event has been organised by Pilar Martínez-Vasseur in collaboration with other professors affiliated to the Research centre on national identities and interculturalism (CRINI) of the University of Nantes. Dissemination session on immigration, human rights and public policy
Professors Ángeles Solanes and Albert Mora will be in Burjassot on Tuesday 27 September at 18.00 to participate in a panel discussion entitled "Immigration policy and limitations on rights: Unresolved issues". The presentations belong to a series of 15 training sessions held by Valencia University's Department for Participation and Territorial Projection in collaboration with the Social Welfare and Education Department of the Valencia Provincial Council. Two areas of systematic human rights violations in Spanish immigration policy will be discussed: border controls and immigration detention.
